Lingual Frenilectomy
The lingual frenum is a fold that extends from the floor of the mouth to the lower face of the tongue, in its midline. It is formed by mucosa, and sometimes also fibrous connective tissue and even genioglossus muscle fibers. It is a dynamic structure, which experiences variations in its shape, size and position throughout the different phases of growth and development. When the lingual frenulum is short, the movements of the tongue can be restricted (ankyloglossia), which can cause alterations in the suction, in the infants, and later in the pronunciation of some consonants, especially the "rr". In these cases, surgical resection of the frenulum or lingual frenectomy is indicated. The intervention can be carried out with local anesthesia or with general anesthesia, depending on the specific characteristics of each case. After the intervention, painful discomforts may appear, which are generally mild and not very long lasting, although they may eventually be intense and may last even for ten or fifteen days, requiring the administration of painkillers. It can be noticed, during the first hours, the saliva dyed of blood or even appear vomiting of dark blood, already digested, and that are in relation to the blood swallowed during the intervention. Dark stools may also be normal, in the immediate days, for the same reason. #cirugiaoral #cirugiaucal #oralsurgery #dentist #dentists #odontologia #frenillo #lingual
